First visit to the Orchard site

The orchard site looking west(ish)The orchard site looking west(ish)Inspired by Pip's email the other day Helen and I took the kids for a winter walk up to the orchard site earlier today. It was the first time I've ever been there, so had to get directions from Pip. It turns out we live quite close - just the other side of Rotcher Wood - so I'm hopeful of frequent future visits.

Settle Hydro launches community share offer

A community share offer has been launched for Yorkshire's first community-owned hydroelectric scheme in Settle on Saturday 6th September 2008. The share offer gives individuals, local businesses and social investors the chance to become members investors of a groundbreaking renewable energy project that will provide clean, green electricity. Settle Hydro Ltd is an Industrial and Provident Society managed by the social enterprise Water Power Enterprises (h2oPE) which is behind Torrs Hydro, a community-owned hydro-electric scheme in Derbyshire. It will be a 50kW hydro power plant at Bridge End Weir, in Settle. The plant will be community-owned and profits from the sale of hydro electricity would fund local environmental and community projects. more details on this story are over at http://www.cooperatives-uk.coop/live/welcome.asp?id=2394&scheme_name=COO...

Record, Track and Reduce Your Carbon Footprint with the MASTT Carbon Account

MASTT's Carbon Account

In partnership with those nice people at thecarbonaccount.com we have now created a specific MASTT user community for local people to record and track our carbon emissions as they (hopefully) reduce over time.

In addition we will be able to feed back information, through the pages of this site, about the aggregate trends for everyone who registers for the service through http://mastt.thecarbonaccount.com, enabling us all to act more effectively as a community to reduce our collective emissions.

The clever stuff behind the scenes at http://mastt.thecarbonaccount.com is based on the current state of the art in this field, including the AMEE (Avoiding Mass Extinction Engine), with advice, input and support from the likes of George Monbiot, Catherine Bottrill at ECI, CAT, all the CRAGers, Carbon Sense, Rob and Ben at Transition Towns, NEF, Gavin at AMEE, CSE, Leo Hickman, Matt Prescott, the WEN, Liz Reason, Chris Jacobs, Oxford City Council, Bartholomew School Eynsham and many others, to quote the site information directly.

Working with thecarbonaccount.com

I've been liaising with the developers of thecarbonaccount.com and we are shortly to set up http://mastt.thecarbonaccount.com to enable people in the Colne Valley to collectively monitor and track our carbon footprint. As soon as we get final confirmation - hopefully any day now - I'll add some further information on this site, with prominent links through to the site.

If anyone has some good coding skills (I understand that thecarbonaccount.com system is built in Python, and mastt.org.uk is Druapl powered using PHP/MySQL) and fancies doing some integration to get the carbon account functionality more deeply embedded into this site, please get in touch.
