Busy Summer for MASTT!

How did it get to September already? I can't believe October is just around the corner too.
Our group has had a busy few months - In August we had a really interesting talk by Nicole Foss who was discussing the economy and transition towns. For this event we managed to fill the meeting room at Slaithwaite Civic Hall with a couple of people having to stand - Thank you to everyone that came along, we hope you found it interesting and hopefully you didn't all rush home to hide your life savings under your mattress!

At the start of this month a few of us attended a 3 day residential course at the lovely Trafford Hall in Chester. We learnt lots of things about energy efficiency in the home which we're going to use to set up our own 'Cosy Homes' energy subgroup for MASTT. We're going to start meeting up to discuss ideas for projects and to share ways in which we can save money, have warmer homes and reduce our energy use.

This month we also launched the 'Colne-u-copia' brand at an event for all the local food and drink businesses, growers, producers and other interested parties in the Colne Valley at a well attended event at Marsden Mechanics. Thank you to Steve from Edibles for organising a great event and Jane & The Handmade Bakery for a lovely local produce buffet. To find out more about Colne-U-Copia, please visit our fancy new website - http://www.colneucopia.co.uk

Last weekend we had a wonderful time at the Colne Valley Food Festival Local Produce Market. Well done to Green Valley Grocer for organising such a lovely day. We heard beautiful music from Enoch's Hammer and story telling by Susanna Meese. Locals took part in the Garlic Challenge weigh-in and MASTT's Produce Swap. I brought some of my hot patio sizzle peppers and took away some lovely homemade jam.

Thank you for reading my blog, feel free to create your own blog by signing up as a user on the website, it's quick and easy to do so don't be shy!

Photos from MASTT's Community Orchard

As it's been a lovely sunny day today, I decided to go along to our Community Orchard to check how the trees were doing. Thanks to our super duper technology I've uploaded some photos for you to check out. Many of the trees have fruit on, mmmm. I think it will be another year or two before they will start producing a better amount of fruit.

On my way up to the orchard I walked past quite a few fruit trees (mainly cherry and apple) which will be a great start to our Local Food Map that we are starting to create. I'll have to retrace my steps so I know where exactly the trees are to plot them on our google map. Further details about this project to follow soon.

It was nice and peaceful up at the orchard (despite being attacked by flies and being stung by something - I don't think nature likes my pale legs being out in public!). I can't wait for the trees to be ready for us to open the orchard up to the public. Our first official event in the orchard will be a picnic as part of the Colne Valley Food Festival in September 2011 - keep your eyes peeled to the website for further information. But before this fantastic event we will have to do some clearing as the weeds are knee high and some of the protection around the trees needs fixing back in place.

Ah, you've got to love the summer.

Thanks for reading my post.

Getting ready for the next Clothes Swap!

Well, it's about 2 weeks until the next ladies clothes swap party - I'm really looking forward to it because I always end up with some fantastic clothes. The poster has been sent out and hopefully lots of people have started buying the tickets from Green Valley Grocer and the Post Office in Slaithwaite (only £3!!).

I've just moved house so I've sorted out a massive bin liner of clothes to swap and I know my mum has done the same! I need to dig out some accessories to bring along because they always go down a treat at the swaps.

Why I love clothes swapping -

* You have a great night out with the girls

* It brings together a group of ladies of all ages

* You save money

* Clothes get reused/loved by someone else (I often get bored of my clothes and struggle to find new ways of wearing them)

* Clothes that don't get taken at the end of the swap are donated to local charity shops so they benefit from the swap too!

(hhhmmmm not sure if I've forgotten anything off that list....? In summary - clothes swapping is great!)

Thanks for reading my blog,

We had a good time at the Green Fair today

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Green Fair in Marsden today. We enjoyed a nice piece of cake, with our cups of tea in the lovely main hall at Marsden Mechanics. The event was fairly well attended but we hope lots more people come along next year. If any of you came along to this event and would like to give us some feedback, we will pass it on to the Green Party for you.

MASTT had our own stall today, where we met lots of lovely people, some who were interested in our new subgroup looking at Energy Saving for Homes... also known to us as Cosy Homes. If anyone else is interested in getting involved in this new subgroup, please send us an email via info@mastt.org.uk and we'll add you to the Cosy Homes mailing list.

How to reduce your waste this Christmas

How to reduce your waste:

If you reduce the amount of waste you produce, you have less
waste to dispose of. It may sound simple and logical but many people
don’t realise that it takes a change in habit to reduce waste.

Firstly, look at what products you buy from the supermarket
(if you go), how many of the things could you buy with less packaging
on? Many people would agree that many products in the supermarket are
over packaged, so look for alternatives. If you want to almost
completely reduce this start by shopping at local farmers markets or by
shopping at greengrocers for loose fruit and veg.

Secondly, only buy what you need. Many supermarkets offer 2
for 1 or 2 for £3 etc but do you really need that extra food/drink? It
may appear to be saving you money but not if you just end up throwing
it away because it has gone out of date before you had time to consume
it.

Thirdly, try to buy alternative products that can be reused such as rechargeable batteries or glass milk bottles.

Fourthly, don’t throw away things that you could be used again
by someone who might appreciate it. You could donate unwanted items to
a charity or friends/family. Alternatively you could visit the
freecycle website (*Details below) and allow someone in you area to
have it instead.

Remember that the first two Rs (Reduce and Reuse) are the most
important way of tackling waste and recycling should only be the final
stage when the product no longer has a use.

How to reduce your waste this Christmas:

Invest in some reusable bags if you have not yet bought any,
these are better for the environment than plastic bags as plastic
doesn’t ever go away. You could even buy some for your friends and
family as gifts.

Try to avoid wrapping your presents with wrapping paper, it is
usually only used once and then thrown away. Alternatives to wrapping
paper could be pages from magazines/comics or gift boxes/bags tied with
string or ribbon that can be reused.

Make your own decorations from things laying around the house
if your old ones are looking shabby, you could even update the ones you
have by adding beads, glitter or bits of fabric.

Try to buy locally grown vegetables because it hasn’t
travelled very far and generally comes without packaging. Organic or
free range meat is not only better for the environment it also means
the animal has enjoyed a reasonable life.

If anyone has anymore ideas on how to save waste this Christmas, please add to this list. Merry Christmas :-)

* Freecycle - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/huddersfieldfreecycle/
A forum where people within Huddersfield can pass on unwanted items to
others by posting a message up describing the item. Also people can
post items that they would like with the description 'WANTED' so if
other people have the item that has been requested and they no longer
want it, they can offer it to this person. In order to use this service
you should sign up for a yahoo account and join the freecycle group for
your area.

My View On: Charity Shops

Over the past few months I have been helping to organise an Ethical Fashion Show, this has led me to work with charities within the Colne Valley. I now realise what fantastic people work within these shops and the number of hidden gems than can be snapped up by savvy shoppers. Keep up the good work!

I also realise how too many people dump bags of rubbish on these poor volunteers - please do them a favour and think before you donate!

We all need to do more to help out local charities (especially in the current economic climate), which can save you money and reduce your impact on the environment (it's a win win situation!). Why don't we all have a look in the back of our wardrobes for those quality items of clothing that no longer fit and donate them to a local charity shop?

I didn't used to buy my clothes from charity shops but over the last couple of years I've become more and more convinced that it is the perfect way to change your wardrobe without feeling guilty about your impact on the environment. It also makes you think differently about your own style and how you put different items together.

It's all about quality not quantity :-)

If you don't fancy
buying your clothes from a charity shop but fancy doing something for
charity - why not hold your very own clothes swapping party and donate
money raised to charity (you could charge per item or charge an entrance fee).

Tetra Packs can be recycled in Huddersfield

I wasn't aware that there was a drop off point in Kirklees household waste site on Emerald Street that householders can take their tetra packs to be recycled by the company that makes them. Possibly because it isn't actually advertised anywhere?

Obviously the key is to not purchase products that are packaged using this product but sometimes you can't avoid it. Well now we know where to take them - so don't forget to take as many as you can!!
