Details of Local Food Group
Purpose of the Local Food Group Local food is something that everyone buys and everyone needs to live, stay healthy and be active. Unfortunately the majority of food people buy is imported from other countries and if often out of season. Locally sourced food is often fresher and tastier than imported food as it has not been produced to keep for longer (ie while it is being transported to this country) so it can be grown for the nicest tasting variety. Local food can be grown by small scale farmers, by allotment holders and even by yourself in your garden. All these different ways of growing are as important as each other. What this group is trying to achieve: *Raise awareness within the community of issues related to food (eg organic growing methods, where your food comes from, food miles) *Promote growing your own food *Encourage people to buy locally sourced products *Assist people in accessing affordable healthy food *Supporting existing businesses that source their products locally or would like to source their products locally *Hold fun events and carry out projects that aid the community in this transition This group is open for anyone to join. To get involved with this group please come along to our Collective Focus meeting at 8.15pm on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Slaithwaite Community Centre. You can also get involved in discussions by posting a message on our 'Discussion Forum'. If you would like to contact us with any questions please email Tiff on info@mastt.org.uk
