Thanks Kate, that's a good point to raise. Anyone thinking about planting edible produce in random public spaces should get the soil checked to make sure it is safe. I have heard that even if the soil is contaminated you can plant flowers on the land for a few years to improve the soil and eventually get it back to a safe level for planting edible crops.
