Green Mother's Day Presents
It’s that time of year again, the time to show your mum that you love her by buying her things that she doesn’t use. How about trying a different approach this year by buying her a thoughtful green gift? It requires a little more thought but even if she doesn’t like it you haven’t damaged the environment in the process.
Here are a few ideas you might like to try –
We all know how plastic bags are damaging the environment, well how about buying her a beautiful reusable bag? There are many styles and sizes to buy from many different online sites. You could even make your own by visiting www.morsbags.com where you can find a pattern to follow.
If your mum enjoys something sweet you could make her some biscuits or a cake. You could spend some time decorating them and adding a personal touch. Alternatively you could make a more savoury treat such as cheese scones or even cooking her a mother’s day meal.
If your mum is a chocoholic you could buy her some fair trade chocolate or buy some packets of toffee from Pennine Wholefoods in Marsden.
Flowers appear to be a favourite for mother’s day but how about buying your mum a potted plant instead? It will keep for longer and can be grown by yourself or bought locally. Richard in Slaithwaite has some lovely arrangements available to buy at the moment with daffodils, pansies and crocuses for only £5. He is open for business on Tuesday and Friday afternoon’s between 1pm and 5pm and is located just off Chain Road (look out for the polly tunnel if you want to find it).
If you’re good at making things you could knit your mum a scarf, dishcloth, hat, gloves or socks. You could also make her a card from old cards you have been given, this way you are reducing the amount of waste you produce. Please try to buy as many recycled products, we need to support this market in order for it to be viable.
This year I plan to fill a basket or box with goodies that my mum likes such as wine, chocolates and natural skin care products that have been sourced as locally as possible. I have already bought her a beautiful patio plant from Richard in Slaithwaite (see picture). All of which will be wrapped in a bow (reused from previous presents).
Let me know if you are planning on getting a green present this year.
