Technical challenges on the website

I don't think there is anywhere to put this, but please redirect if I've just not found the right place.  If there isn't anywhere else to put this then this thread can serve as a holding space for techy issues.

Hi there, When I registered I wasn't required to add a password and had to go through all sorts of shenanigans to get a password (tbh I can't remember exactly how I did it, but it required emails being sent to me etc and a non techy wouldn't have bothered).  (I can try and replicate and post full details if you want).  Then, once I'd registered, I went to the forum and wanted to submit a topic, so I hit Login in "Login to post new forum topic" at the top of the page and got directed to "you are not authorised to access this page".  I nearly gave up and then spotted the login half way down the LHS.  Bit frustrating.  It's fine if you're a regular user and know what to do, but first timers might well be turning away and not coming back.  ...... oh, just one more thing..... it seems to me that the Last Reply column on the forums page is doing something wierd and very misleading, for example I posted to the BIG LUNCH thread yesterday and was replied to today and the Last Reply column shows 1 week 4 days ago.  If I was using this column as it should be used, I would'nt be bothering to check into any of the threads since it looks like there's been no action for ages.  I hope this is helpful, as a new user of the site I've found it a bit frustrating.  Since I generally won't be able to make it to meetings, this is my forum for keeping up with what's happening.  Cheers F

Hmmm where has this disappeared to?  When I posted it it said it had been posted, but then no sign of it in the forum.  Is it being moderated?  If so, it should say so.  F

Thanks for the comments, Fi. most helpful.

The user registration hoop-jumping is there to deter spam registrations (and consequent rubbish content being posted all over the site). It's something of a balancing act - I would much rather have a more straightforward user sign-up system, but we end up having to clean up the resultant mess. A more complex approach means a cleaner website and maybe fewer users (as you say it may put some people off).

Forum posts are not moderated and go live on the site immediately.

I'm guessing that if you saw an 'access denied' message when you hit a login link, you were already logged in. The login block that you found halfway down the page used to be at the top and also available on every page (my preference), but others have chosen an alternative approach.

As regards the error in reporting the time of the 'Last Reply' I'll look into this, but I've just checked with this comment, and the 'last reply' time is showing correctly.

It could be that your browser was simply choosing to show you the version of the page it had stored in its cache rather than the current live page. This can be managed in your browser preferences (probably something about checking the server every time for the latest content, exact wording will depend on which browser you are using).

Hi Graham

When I registered, there wasn't a chance to input a password and as far as I remember there was nothing saying that my password would be sent to me and I'd be able to change it.  Could there be a very obvious sentence to this effect on the sign up page?

I think you're correct that I was already logged in when getting the access denied message.  However, I've just replicated this by logging off the internet and then back on and onto Mastt anew and trying the "login to post" link, again getting the not authorised message, but then seeing my name down the lhs with the create content option etc, however the threads are still requiring that I log on properly in order to contribute....... very strange.

When I haven't logged on, the last reply times are incorrect, then, when I log on they are correct at the thread level but not at the topic level.

...... there is some very odd stuff going on which I cannot fathom.  Given that the dates are updating to some extent I don't think it can be the browser prefs.

Cheers F

I've hopefully clarified the wording on the registration page, to expressly state that username and password will be sent to the registrant.

As for the issue with the posting times showing differently depending on whether logged in or out, I'm afraid I can't replicate this behaviour, and if I can't replicate it I can't fix it.

Also I'm not sure what you mean when you say "log on properly". Users are either logged in or not, there is no middle ground. You need to be logged in to post content. If you can offer any further detail on this issue I'll gladly look at it.

Hi Graham - I can't now replicate any of the above; so it seems to have been that waiting a day or two has solved the problem ;-)  Bizarre, cos for most other things today I've been an airhead and nothing has worked.  Hey ho.  Cheers F
