Yay for green recycling bins!
Finally we all have been given recycling bins, at last we can reduce our impact on the environment. But a point to not forget is the 1st 'R' to Reduce the amount of waste we produce by avoiding packaged food as much of it is made out of plastic so it cannot be recycled by our council. Hows everyone doing with their lovely new bins? Any confusion over what can go in them?

I'm confused about yogurt pots, and food trays! And tetra paks!
If you look at the pretty booklet you should have recieved - in that it tells you that Kirklees can only accept plastic bottles to recycle (as they are made from either type 1 or 2 plastic, whereas other things like plastic trays could be made from the hundreds of other types of plastic). Tetra packs can be collected and taken to any of the household waste sites. As far as I know Kirklees are going to be looking in to including Tetra Paks in the current dry recyclable collection, however it isn't actually Kirklees who are recycling the Tetra Paks, it is the Tetra Pak company.
I'm pretty sure the waste site in Meltham also takes tetrapaks.
Does everyone know the dates when their waste is being collected over xmas? Make sure you keep waste to a minimum as there will be around 3 weeks between grey collections over this period!
From last week's grey collection there won't be a grey bin collection until the 1st week in January 2009.
i've cut down our paper going to recycling by incorporating it into the compost bin.
the compost bin needs extra brown stuff like paper and straw to balance the greater amount of grass cuttings, so now i happily pass all the paper we recieve through the shredder. i've been shredding anything official that we don't want to keep for quite some time since i saw a tv programme about how easy it is to steal identities by riffling through waste paper to find utility bills and bank statements.
so thats all been going to the worm bin for a couple of years. but now i've started a prpoer compost bin its great to have as much paper shreds as i want and they go back into the ground. imagine that. returning the stuff to where it came from.
and what this means is that whereas do have 2 green bins to cope with all the stuff we've been recycling, now we're struggling to fill one bin ! groovey !
the paper must occupy a lot of space, methinks.
