How can MASTT become more inclusive?

We've received a few comments recently from members of the community who think that MASTT is too exclusive and our events aren't attended by the wider community. Does anyone have any ideas how we could become more inclusive for new members and reach out to the wider community with the activities we organise?

For our latest event which was held in Marsden Mechanics, we put flyers in all the school bags at all the local schools and put posters up in the local shops. It was successful in attracting lots of parents but i don't think it is feasible to do for every event we organise as it costs a fair amount of money and takes up lots of volunteer time.

The Blog and Facebook

I just noticed that there were a whole load of blog entries showing down the lhs of the web page, clicking on each one takes you to that individual entry - not the whole blog.  There is no Blog link at the top of the page.  It took me a while to see that the entry point was under my account details - not appropriate since it's not "my" blog.  Could a blog link be put at the top of the page next to the discussion forum?  How is the blog different from the discussion forum?  Hmmmmm What is the blog for?  Usually they are for a different audience and sit separately but given the amount of activity on the website, why have both?  I have my own blogs and I don't quite see why I would blog here when there is a discussion forum.  It begs lots of questions also about how to get out to a broader and younger audience.  Does Mastt have a facebook group, does it want one?  if not, why not? if so, can I set it up?  Interested in all your views.  Fiona

MASTT mentioned in New Internationalist

Exciting news! MASTT were mentioned, along with Green Valley Grocer in Issue 430 of New Internationalist....MASTT's very own Jon Walker gives some fantastic quotes. Unfortunately the article can't be read online so you'll have to try find a copy in the shops. We'll see if we can scan the article and upload it to the website.

Links to other Transition groups in our area.

To start this  topic off here's a link to Hebden Bridge TT group's website.

http://www.hebdenbridgetransitiontown.org.uk/

I do know there's groups of people looking at starting TT groups inHolmfirth and Meltham,

I'll go looking for other groups in a cicle around us and I'll do that soonish unless you fancy looking putting for links to add on this topic.

I'm not precious about this, so go look and add if you fancy.

I wonder just how many other groups have websites ????? and party this is a way of comparing what other TT's are doing on their websites and in their groups to see if there's anything we can borrow to inspire ourselves

Food Programme worth a listen

Today's food programme is definitely worth a listen:

All about climate change and the future of food.  F

Documentary worth a watch - Future of Food

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00m9xk9/Future_of_Food_Episode_1/

Not sure how long this will be available for, but it's worth a watch if anyone didn't see it.  Episode three mentions Incredible Edibles.

I have watched it all and was a bit disappointed that it didn't do much on the movement towards local, slow food.  Though it touched on changes to eating habits quite a lot, it didn't say enough on the impact of cows etc...... I'm sure this will have been too politically sensitive for the beeb to tackle, a shame.

Did anyone else see it?  What did you think?

Co-operative power tools!!!!!

I'm not sure whether to post this here or in waste and recycling.  Not even sure if this is at all in the spirit of Mastt.  Here's the thing...... we struggle with space in our house and don't want to keep acquiring stuff which is needed for one or two jobs.  Just recently I did just that when I bought a rotary tile cutter so that I could tile the kitchen.  Currently we are struggling to keep the mega-long grass at bay on the paths at the allottment and hubby keeps wanting to buy a petrol stimmer.  I'm doing my best but with two young kids I just don't have the time to keep at it with a scythe.  We don't need one much anyway, just three or four times in summer.  I'm sure there are other tools which come into this category - carpet cleaners maybe, rotavators etc.  Primarily I'm wondering if anyone has a petrol or cordless strimmer we could borrow but also wondering if anyone else thinks it might work for people to list the items they have for people to use so that they can be shared.  We are more than happy for our tile cutter to be used any time.  It's unlikely to be used again by us unless we more house.  Cheers F

Age of Stupid

Has Mastt shown this film?  They are allowing people to show it for free.  Could we organise a screening?
